Nature loss ‘dwarfs bank crisis’

By Richard Black
Environment correspondent, BBC News website, Barcelona

Losses are great, and continuous, says the report.
The global economy is losing more money from the disappearance of forests than through the current banking crisis, according to an EU-commissioned study.

It puts the annual cost of forest loss at between $2 trillion and $5 trillion.
The figure comes from adding the value of the various services that forests perform, such as providing clean water and absorbing carbon dioxide.

Daniel from Italy has been staying and helping put the copping tiles on the roof and during one of our conversations he told me about the global 1 billion tree campaign which has a new goal to plant 7 billion trees. I have pledged to plant 300 trees this winter, mainly oaks and corks as well as some olives and almonds.

Also he showed me another Spanish website Madeiras Nobles for a Spanish company that is planting trees (walnuts, cherries, chestnuts) as a long term investment. We calculated if you planted 900 walnuts and trained them to grow one main trunk after 20 years or so you could get 1 million Euros (conservative estimate).

This seems like a more sustainable way to invest our time and money (for children, retirement, as well as personal satisfaction) especially considering the global financial situation. Maybe someone here can set up a similar company here in Portugal where they plant walnuts, cherries, or chestnuts and look after them and people with a high carbon footprint can pay back their ecological debt (surely nearly all of us in the North).

So join the tree planting mission this winter and lets all plant some trees.

Also a big, big thank you to Lenny who helped clean the farm, house and caravan.
